Locksmith in Fairmont, OntarioSmart locks, fitted to a sound door

A keypad or phone-controlled lock is only as good as the door it sits on. Before anything is mounted on a home in Fairmont we check the alignment, the strike and the bore, then set up codes, a mechanical backup and a walkthrough so the household can actually use what was installed.

Lock and key services

Whatever brought you to this page from Fairmont, whether it was a lockout, a lost key, a move, a break-in or simply a door that has annoyed you for months, one of the services below fits. Each is written to tell you what happens, what it involves, and what you have when the locksmith leaves.

Lockouts

Lockout Services

A lockout is stressful in proportion to how long it drags on. We keep the phone questions to the essentials, ask you to have identification or a document showing the place is yours, and explain the opening method before touching the door.

Change or rekey

Change or Rekey Locks

Front doors, back doors, patio sliders, garages, mailboxes and the bedroom door with the lock that never worked. Residential services cover every entry point in a house or condo, with choices explained in terms of daily use rather than jargon.

Locked out in Fairmont? Reach us any hour

Our default for doors in Fairmont is to repair before replacing. A deadbolt that grinds usually needs its strike moved, not a new lock. A cylinder that fights the key often wants fresh pins and a clean. We say so, even when a replacement would be the easier sale, and when replacement really is right we explain why and show you the options in your hand.

  • Told what to expectBefore starting we say how long the work usually takes, what noise or mess is involved and what the door will be like afterwards.
  • Room to declineIf a suggestion does not suit you, decline it. We will do what you asked for, do it well and leave the rest as advice.
  • A tidy handoverKeys counted into your hand, the area cleaned, the old parts dealt with and a plain summary of the work. Then we are gone.

2021 census · what it means at the door

  • 52%Older homes

About 52% of homes in London were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.

Older homes tend to have had many hands on their doors: owners, tenants, tradespeople, family. A locksmith visiting such a house pays attention to who holds keys now, and rekeying or a keyed-alike set often matters more than any new hardware.

  • 49%

Single-detached houses make up about 49% of homes in London (2021 Census).

In areas of mixed housing, landlords may own a house here and a few units there. A locksmith can put all of it under one master system so the owner carries one key while each tenant's key opens only their own door.

One key for the front door, another for the back, a third for the side door into the garage, and a fourth for the shed. You stand on the step every evening flipping through them in the dark, trying each one until something turns.

Locksmith FAQ

(226) 777-0127

I am a landlord. Should I rekey between tenants?

Many landlords do, and it removes the question of whether every copy came back. The locksmith rekeys the unit's cylinders so the incoming tenant holds the only working keys, cuts the copies you want, and notes the count for your move-in record. Because provincial tenancy rules expect the tenant to be handed replacement keys whenever a landlord changes a lock, the visit ends with keys for both of you and a clear list of which doors were done.

Will a new lock fit the holes already in my door?

Usually, yes. Most residential doors are prepared to standard sizes, a 54 millimetre cross bore and a backset of 60 or 70 millimetres, and most modern hardware adjusts between those backsets. The locksmith measures before choosing, so the new lock is matched to the door rather than the other way around. Where an older mortise lock or an unusual bore is found, filler plates, extension kits or a carefully jigged new bore bring the door to standard.

What information should I have ready when I call?

The door's material and rough thickness, what lock is on it now and whether it is a separate deadbolt above a knob or lever, and whether there is a storm door. Say what you want the lock to do: codes only, phone control, alerts, auto-lock. Mention how the Wi-Fi is at the front door if you know, whether you rent or own, and how many people need their own way in. A photo of the inside and outside of the existing lock is a real help.

What if my safe is bolted to the floor or built into a wall?

The opening and combination work proceed the same way regardless of how the safe is mounted; access to the lock face, dial or keypad is what matters, not whether the case itself can be moved. A built-in or bolted safe simply means the locksmith works around its fixed position rather than moving it to a more convenient spot.

What is the difference between a mechanical dial lock and an electronic keypad?

A mechanical dial has no battery and is set by hand to a private combination, turning through a sequence to release the bolt; it never runs out of power but takes a little practice to open. An electronic keypad accepts a numeric code and can support several separate codes for different people, but it depends on a battery that eventually needs replacing. Many owners choose based on how many people need access rather than one being simply superior to the other.
