From the shop

Plain talk, tidy work.

We think of a lockout as the start of a relationship, not a one-off rescue. Once the door is open we take a moment to look at why it happened: a latch that locks behind you when the wind slams it, a key worn past the point of reliability, a spare that lives nowhere. A small fix or a second key cut often means we never see you in the cold again.

  • Told what to expectBefore starting we say how long the work usually takes, what noise or mess is involved and what the door will be like afterwards.
  • Room to declineIf a suggestion does not suit you, decline it. We will do what you asked for, do it well and leave the rest as advice.
  • A tidy handoverKeys counted into your hand, the area cleaned, the old parts dealt with and a plain summary of the work. Then we are gone.

Locksmith services

Lock and key services

Our work covers doors and the things that secure them: locks, keys, cylinders, safes, keypads and the electronic hardware that has quietly replaced keys in many buildings. The groups below help you find the right page, and the phone number helps when reading is not the mood.

Lockouts

Lockout Services

A lockout is stressful in proportion to how long it drags on. We keep the phone questions to the essentials, ask you to have identification or a document showing the place is yours, and explain the opening method before touching the door.

Change or rekey

Change or Rekey Locks

Front doors, back doors, patio sliders, garages, mailboxes and the bedroom door with the lock that never worked. Residential services cover every entry point in a house or condo, with choices explained in terms of daily use rather than jargon.

  1. Two detached brass lock cylinders and four house keys on a wooden counter. — Lock Rekeying, London
Lock RekeyingYour basement tenant has given notice, and a new one arrives on the first. The lock on the separate entrance works perfectly well.
  2. Person holding a silver-colored lock beside an open wooden door with exposed circular holes and a latch at its edge. — Deadbolt Installation, London
Deadbolt InstallationThe door from the garage into the kitchen closes on a passage knob with no lock at all. Anyone who opens the garage is one turn of a handle from the house, and the insurance renewal form has a question about exactly…
  3. Detached satin-nickel lever hardware, tubular latch and strike plate on a wooden workbench. — Lock Replacement & Upgrade, London
Lock Replacement & UpgradeThe lever on the side door droops toward the floor and rattles in your hand. The latch no longer springs back on its own, so the door drifts open behind you unless you pull it shut and check it twice.
  4. Person holding a long door handle and rectangular lock case beside an open wooden door with exposed hardware recesses. — Vintage Mortise Lock Service, London
Vintage Mortise Lock ServiceThe brass knob on the front door of your century home turns, but nothing happens on the other side. The latch stays tucked in, the door swings free, and the only thing holding it shut is the deadbolt and a bit key that…
  5. Person holding a black door-handle assembly and a latch beside a glazed door with exposed lock openings. — Smart Lock Installation, London
Smart Lock InstallationThe rental turns over every few months and each time you drive across town to swap keys, then wonder whether copies were made. A lock with codes you can set and erase from your phone would end that cycle.
  6. Pale blue garden gate with a black lever latch between light stone pillars. — Gate & Building Entry Locks, London
Gate & Building Entry LocksEvery time the courtyard gate closes, it slams hard enough to rattle the fence panels, and the deadlatch never quite drops into the keeper before the spring yanks it the rest of the way. One good gust of wind and it…
  7. Detached threaded cam lock and mounting washer on a workbench in front of closed mail compartments. — Mailbox Lock Replacement, London
Mailbox Lock ReplacementSomeone tried to pry the little door on the mailbox open with a screwdriver, and though the mail sitting inside is untouched, the lock now sits crooked in its hole and the key barely catches when it is turned.

Commercial

Commercial Locks

A shop key that walked out with a former employee is the classic commercial call. Rekeying the cylinders puts an end to it, and it is often the moment a business sets up a master key plan so the next departure is a matter of one key, not all of them.

Calls like these

Disassembled brass and steel lock cylinder parts laid on a gray metal surface with small brass pins, springs and tweezers.

Deadbolt Installation

Someone tried the door last winter. The frame took it, but the strike plate is bent, one screw hole is stripped, and the bolt sits in the pocket at a slight angle. It still locks, and it still bothers you every night.

How a visit goes

The visit follows a steady order. On the phone you describe the door, the lock and where the key went, which tells the locksmith what to bring.

Drawing: a house seen from the street. The van pulls up, the garage door is opened for the work, then it closes level and the porch light comes on.
  1. 1 of 3

    Confirming it is your door

Before touching the lock we ask for identification or another way to show you live or work there. It protects you as much as anyone.

  2. 2 of 3

    The gentlest opening that works

Most doors can be picked or bypassed with no damage. We start there and only move to a firmer method if the lock leaves no other choice, explaining as we go.

  3. 3 of 3

A working lock before we go

Once you are inside we check the lock still turns properly and that you have a key that works. If the lock was the reason you were stuck, we say so.

2021 census · what it means at the door

  • 52%Older homes

About 52% of homes in London were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.

Basement and side entries on older homes were often fitted long after the house was built, with whatever lock was on hand. Bringing those doors up to the standard of the front entry, and onto the same key, is a common and satisfying job.

  • 49%

Single-detached houses make up about 49% of homes in London (2021 Census).

Neighbourhoods of houses beside townhouses and low-rise buildings have a range of door constructions: solid wood, steel, fibreglass and metal-clad. A locksmith who works in such an area is used to fitting hardware to all of them without new holes.

Locksmith FAQ

(226) 777-0127

Can you get me in if my smart lock has died?

Yes, usually. Backup access on a keypad or app-controlled deadbolt depends on the model. Many carry small external terminals that wake the lock when a fresh nine-volt battery is touched to them, long enough to enter your code; some also keep a conventional keyed override behind a cover, which a locksmith can pick or decode like any other cylinder, while other current models have no cylinder at all and rely only on their own recovery method. Once inside, the batteries are replaced and your codes are checked.

What should I have ready when I call about a lockout?

The address and which door you are outside of, what kind of lock is on it as far as you can tell, and where the key is: inside, lost, broken or simply refusing to turn. Mention whether the door is a rental, whether anyone is inside, and whether the lock is electronic. If you have photo identification on you, say so; if not, say that too so the verification route is agreed before the locksmith arrives.

What if the door is stuck rather than the lock?

This is more common than people expect, especially in older houses and at the change of seasons. A door that has swollen, sagged on its hinges or been pushed out of square by thick weatherstripping can pin the bolt against the strike so it will not draw back even with the right key. The locksmith relieves the pressure to free the bolt, then adjusts the strike, hinges or seal so the door closes and locks without a shoulder.

Can a high security cylinder be rekeyed later?

Yes. Like any pin tumbler it can be repinned to a new combination by a locksmith who holds the system, so a departed employee's key can be retired without replacing hardware. Some lines use interchangeable cores that swap in moments with a control key, which suits businesses with frequent turnover. Rekeying stays within your registered keyway, so the key control you paid for continues after the change.
