How we approach the work
Plain talk, tidy work.
From the shop
Huron Heights Lock & Key Co.
The first call is where most of the work actually happens. We ask what you are seeing, how the door behaves, whether the keys are lost or simply left inside, and what kind of vehicle you are standing beside. Those few minutes mean the technician arrives with the right blanks, cylinders and tools, and can give you a clear picture of the job before starting. We would rather ask one question too many than turn up unprepared. Once on site we confirm you are entitled to access, walk you through the plan, and check that you are comfortable with it. Only then do the tools come out.

- Told what to expectBefore starting we say how long the work usually takes, what noise or mess is involved and what the door will be like afterwards.
- Room to declineIf a suggestion does not suit you, decline it. We will do what you asked for, do it well and leave the rest as advice.
- A tidy handoverKeys counted into your hand, the area cleaned, the old parts dealt with and a plain summary of the work. Then we are gone.

How a visit goes
The visit follows a steady order. On the phone you describe the door, the lock and where the key went, which tells the locksmith what to bring.
1 of 3
Confirming it is your door
Before touching the lock we ask for identification or another way to show you live or work there. It protects you as much as anyone.
2 of 3
The gentlest opening that works
Most doors can be picked or bypassed with no damage. We start there and only move to a firmer method if the lock leaves no other choice, explaining as we go.
3 of 3
A working lock before we go
Once you are inside we check the lock still turns properly and that you have a key that works. If the lock was the reason you were stuck, we say so.

2021 census · what it means at the door
52%Older homes
About 52% of homes in London were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.
Basement and side entries on older homes were often fitted long after the house was built, with whatever lock was on hand. Bringing those doors up to the standard of the front entry, and onto the same key, is a common and satisfying job.
49%
Single-detached houses make up about 49% of homes in London (2021 Census).
Neighbourhoods of houses beside townhouses and low-rise buildings have a range of door constructions: solid wood, steel, fibreglass and metal-clad. A locksmith who works in such an area is used to fitting hardware to all of them without new holes.
