When does a locksmith decide to drill instead of pick?

Drilling is the last rung, reached only when the cylinder has genuinely stopped cooperating. Typical reasons are a plug seized by corrosion or a failed spring, a key snapped deep inside that blocks the pins, a high-security cylinder whose anti-pick features make picking impractical, or a lock already damaged by someone's earlier attempt. The decision is explained before the drill comes out, the hole is confined to the cylinder, and replacement hardware goes in straight afterwards. Home Lockout Service

Can you open a door that has a push bar on the inside?

Yes. From outside, an exit device is operated through its trim, which may be a keyed lever, a pull with a cylinder or a bare rim cylinder. Depending on the trim fitted, picking or decoding that cylinder either retracts the latch directly or unlocks a lever, knob or thumbpiece that then has to be turned to let the latch go. The bar, rods and dogging feature stay as installed for the emergency way out, and the bar is pressed afterward to confirm it releases the latch with one push. Business Lockout Service

Can a new key be made from the two broken halves?

Usually. Laid end to end, the halves show the full set of cuts and identify the blank, and a locksmith reads them with a gauge and cuts a fresh key to those depths on a code machine. That is better than tracing the broken blade on a duplicator, because a worn key copied is a worn key repeated. If a spare or the key code exists, that is used instead. Broken Key Extraction

How long does a break-in repair take?

It depends on how much gave way. A new lockset and a reinforced strike on a sound frame is a modest job. Bonding a split jamb, sleeving a crushed door edge, reinforcing the hinges and rekeying several cylinders takes longer, and a shattered frame means a securing visit now and a second visit after the carpenter. The locksmith gives a sense of the time once the damage has been seen, and the opening is secured before leaving even when a part has to be ordered. Break-In Damage Lock Repair

Change or Rekey Locks

What is a restricted keyway, and does it change anything?

A restricted or patented keyway is one whose blanks are not sold to the public, so copies can only be cut by an authorized dealer from a record of who is allowed to have them. Rekeying such a cylinder is the same operation inside, but the new keys are cut from controlled blanks and the count is logged. The benefit is that a key cannot be duplicated at a kiosk without your knowledge, which makes the record of who holds one much easier to trust. Lock Rekeying

How high above the knob does the deadbolt go?

The usual position is 140 to 150 mm above the centre of the knob, which lines the two locks up and keeps both within one reach. Manufacturers' templates assume that spacing, which helps a later keypad or handleset line up, though many handlesets still need their own lower hole drilled to that model's template. The height is nudged if it would land on glass, a decorative panel or a hollow spot inside an insulated door, and to make sure the frame behind it is solid. Deadbolt Installation

Can every door in the house work from one key?

Yes, provided the cylinders share a compatible keyway, which the locksmith checks when choosing hardware. New cylinders are pinned on site to a single new key and any existing locks worth keeping are repinned to match. Front, back, side and garage doors commonly end up on one key, and a shed or gate padlock can join them. You then decide how many copies exist and who holds each. Lock Replacement & Upgrade

Is it worth repairing an old mortise lock instead of replacing it?

Usually, yes. The mechanisms are simple and robust, and what fails is nearly always a spring, dried grease or wear on one part, all of which are repairable on a bench. Replacing the lock with a modern cylindrical set means boring a large hole through the door stile and filling the old pocket, which is more work and changes the door for good. A rebuilt case keeps the original trim and keeps the door intact. Vintage Mortise Lock Service

High Security Locks

When does a locksmith decide to drill a safe instead of opening it another way?

Drilling is chosen when the gentler options for that specific lock, manipulation and decoding on a mechanical dial, or a manufacturer reset or override on an electronic one, are unavailable or have not worked, rather than following one fixed order on every safe. It is also the answer when the lock has genuinely failed, such as a seized wheel pack or a dead circuit board with no working override. The decision is explained before drilling starts, not discovered afterward. Safe Opening & Combination Change

How much weight does a filled safe put on the floor?

It depends entirely on the unit's size and construction, since the steel body itself usually weighs far more than whatever ends up inside it. A small document safe and a large commercial unit sit at very different points on that scale. Confirming the safe's own weight before delivery, and checking it against the floor it will sit on, is part of the assessment rather than something guessed at on arrival. Safe Installation & Servicing

Can a high security cylinder be rekeyed later?

Yes. Like any pin tumbler it can be repinned to a new combination by a locksmith who holds the system, so a departed employee's key can be retired without replacing hardware. Some lines use interchangeable cores that swap in moments with a control key, which suits businesses with frequent turnover. Rekeying stays within your registered keyway, so the key control you paid for continues after the change. High Security Locks

Commercial Locks

What is a master key system and does a small business need one?

In a master key system each lock accepts its own change key and also a master key above it, so a manager carries one key while staff carry keys that open only their own doors. Small businesses with three or four doors often manage without one. A master earns its place once there are several rooms with different people in them, or several locations, and the owner would otherwise carry a ring of keys. Commercial Rekeying

Can different lock brands be mixed in one master key system?

Sometimes, but it depends on the keyway and pinning platform each brand uses; some are compatible with one another and some are not. Where a mix already exists on a property, the assessment identifies which cylinders can be brought into a single hierarchy and which need replacing with a matching platform so every level pins correctly across the whole set of doors. Master Key System Design

Can different doors run on different schedules?

Yes, and this is one of the more useful parts of the system. A front office can unlock for regular business hours, a stockroom can allow only two credentials at any hour, and a loading dock can release only during a set delivery window. Schedules are set per door and per access level in the controller, and can be changed at any time without touching the hardware itself. Access Control Installation

What outside trim options exist for an exit device?

A plain pull suits a door nobody needs to lock from outside. A lever with a key cylinder lets authorized people turn the handle and enter while the inside stays a simple push. A keyed cylinder alone, without a lever, suits occasional entry where a full handle is not needed. All three leave the inside crossbar untouched, since the trim only ever affects the outside. Two people beside a dark sedan, one holding up a black key fob. — Car Lockout Service, London

Car Keys

Is an older car easier or harder to open than a new one?

Different rather than easier. An older car usually has a cylinder in every door and simple linkages, so picking or decoding the lock is routine. A newer car may hide its cylinder, has doors full of electronics that call for wedge-and-reach rather than anything inside the door, and adds an immobiliser to any lost-key work. Either way the locksmith chooses the method by the model, not by guesswork. Car Lockout Service

Can a key be made for an older car with no chip?

Yes, for a vehicle that genuinely has no immobilizer, checked by VIN and equipment rather than assumed from age, since several early-2000s vehicles already shipped with a factory immobilizer and coded key. Where that is the case, it is the simplest key work there is: a blade cut to the factory code from the VIN or to a reading of the door lock, rather than copied from a worn original. If the ignition has become sloppy, the locksmith can rebuild it in the same visit. Car Key Replacement

What if the fob's battery is already low?

A low battery in the original does not stop a spare from being made, since the chip and code stored inside still respond during programming even as the battery fades. It is worth mentioning the low battery when you call, though, since the new fob is a natural moment to have a fresh battery on hand for both keys and to note which type each one takes. Spare Car Key Duplication

How do I know if my fob just needs a new battery?

A fob that has gone quiet, but whose mechanical blade still opens the door normally, is very often a battery rather than a programming problem. A fresh coin-cell battery, sized to what that fob calls for, is worth trying before assuming anything electronic has failed. If a new battery changes nothing, the fault sits somewhere else in the fob or the vehicle's memory. Key Fob Programming
