Broken Key Extraction
A roommate tried to help with tweezers, then by gluing the other half to it. The fragment is now further in than it started, there is dried glue around the keyway, and the front door still does not open.
Broken Key Extraction
A key that needs jiggling, a bolt that only throws when you lift the handle, a cylinder that spins loose in the door. These are small annoyances in Pottersburg homes that become lockouts if ignored. We tune, rebuild or swap the part at fault and leave the door working like it did when it was new.

2021 census · what it means at the door
52%Older homes
About 52% of homes in London were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.
In neighbourhoods of established homes, keys have often been copied many times over many owners. Rekeying every exterior door to one fresh key is the common first job, and it works on old cylinders just as well as on new ones.
49%
Single-detached houses make up about 49% of homes in London (2021 Census).
Mixed housing brings mixed hardware ages as well as types. A locksmith may rebuild a mortise lock on a semi-detached house and then set up a keypad on a townhouse door across the road, and treats each with the care its owner expects.
Locksmith services
Homes and businesses in Pottersburg tend to need the same handful of things from a locksmith, so that is how the list is arranged: emergency openings, changing or rekeying locks, stronger hardware for people who want it, commercial doors and access, and safes. Car keys sit at the end for the households that need them.

A lockout is stressful in proportion to how long it drags on. We keep the phone questions to the essentials, ask you to have identification or a document showing the place is yours, and explain the opening method before touching the door.

The visit follows a steady order. On the phone you describe the door, the lock and where the key went, which tells the locksmith what to bring.

Before touching the lock we ask for identification or another way to show you live or work there. It protects you as much as anyone.

Most doors can be picked or bypassed with no damage. We start there and only move to a firmer method if the lock leaves no other choice, explaining as we go.

Once you are inside we check the lock still turns properly and that you have a key that works. If the lock was the reason you were stuck, we say so.
In most cases yes, and it is tested in front of you with a key that fits. The inspection after extraction is where the honest answer lives: if the pins, springs and cap are sound and the keyway is clean, the cylinder goes back into service with a fresh key. If wear or damage caused the break, that is explained and a rekey or new cylinder is offered as a separate choice.
A security strike is a heavier plate with a formed steel pocket that wraps around the bolt instead of leaving it in bare wood. It is set into the jamb and fixed with long screws, typically three inches, that pass through the jamb and the shim space into the framing, with the longest screws placed nearest the door stop where the bolt bears. Manufacturers specify the pocket depth so the bolt extends fully. The result spreads a kick across the wall stud rather than two small screws.
They lead to the same result, a door that a different key opens, by different means. Changing the locks puts new hardware on the door. Rekeying keeps the deadbolt and handle you have and changes what is inside the cylinder, commonly the bottom pins on a conventional lock or a reset on a homeowner-rekeyable one, so a new key operates it and the old one turns nothing. For hardware in good condition, rekeying is the natural choice after a lost key because nothing about the door's look or fit changes.
Usually, yes. Most residential doors are prepared to standard sizes, a 54 millimetre cross bore and a backset of 60 or 70 millimetres, and most modern hardware adjusts between those backsets. The locksmith measures before choosing, so the new lock is matched to the door rather than the other way around. Where an older mortise lock or an unusual bore is found, filler plates, extension kits or a carefully jigged new bore bring the door to standard.
The door's material and rough thickness, what lock is on it now and whether it is a separate deadbolt above a knob or lever, and whether there is a storm door. Say what you want the lock to do: codes only, phone control, alerts, auto-lock. Mention how the Wi-Fi is at the front door if you know, whether you rent or own, and how many people need their own way in. A photo of the inside and outside of the existing lock is a real help.
