Home Lockout ServiceA little attention twice a year is enough. Follow your lock's own care instructions: many take a puff of dry graphite or PTFE lubricant worked in with the key, some a specified liquid product instead; general-purpose oils collect grit. Retire keys that have worn thin and cut fresh ones from a crisp original or the code. Snug up hinge and strike screws each spring and fall as the door moves with the humidity. A key that starts needing a wiggle is an early warning worth acting on.

Often, yes. A replacement cylinder in the same keyway can be pinned to the cuts on the key already on your ring, so the front and back doors stay on one key and nothing else in the house changes. If the old keyway is no longer made or the key is badly worn, the new cylinder comes with fresh keys and the other doors can be rekeyed to match in the same visit.
They lead to the same result, a door that a different key opens, by different means. Changing the locks puts new hardware on the door. Rekeying keeps the deadbolt and handle you have and changes what is inside the cylinder, commonly the bottom pins on a conventional lock or a reset on a homeowner-rekeyable one, so a new key operates it and the old one turns nothing. For hardware in good condition, rekeying is the natural choice after a lost key because nothing about the door's look or fit changes.
Two causes cover most cases. Either paint has built up on the faceplate, the bolt or the strike so the bolt drags across it, or the door has dropped so the bolt is entering the strike pocket at an angle and rubbing its edge. Occasionally a bent deadbolt lever inside the case adds friction. Cleaning the paint back, adjusting the strike and checking the lever all happen as part of the service.
